Toy Scene Review - Israel S01E02 - Tamar Moshkovitz

Toy Scene Reviews starting with a series penned by Yaniv Brick, and covering the Israel Designer Toy Scene. I hope this view into a specific region will help to enlighten and embolden Toy Artists to reach across international lines and further the global toy scene as a whole. This series will post every Monday till done.

And the invitation is open to developing more Toy Scene Review series posts, with various guest writers. So if you know your countries toy scene inside and out, drop a line at:

Thanks and enjoy.

Those of you who have been following designer toys since the early 2000s have probably encountered works by Tamar Moshkovitz, an until recently Tel Aviv- and now Berlin-based illustrator and artist. Her 2005 toy debut, the Toy2R 2.5inch Knit Pup Qee, was produced as part of the UK Design-A-Qee Series (with lineup that included young Joe Ledbetter and Matt Jones (Lunartik), as well as fellow Israeli Arbel Ratzin). Between 2005 and 2009 she designed Plushood, a plush toy series produced independently (in Israel) in partnership with Shlomi Schillinger. These toys juxtaposed the soft plush medium with rather violent and perverted storylines, based on the Tamar’s neighbors in real life, which were of borderline personalities.

“The story, and its dialog with shape, is the most important thing to me” she says. This emphasis on the story inspired the production also of Plushood animated videos that lead multiple Pictoplasma festival appearances. The series of toys was sold successfully worldwide and was often displayed in toy stores right next to the popular Uglydoll series. In fact, it was selling so well that the artist itself still misses some to complete the set. With more plush toys and customs on various vinyl platforms for numerous art shows, including the DIY Bart Qee World Tour, and collaborations with artists as Nathan Jurevicius and Mike Burnet, Tamar’s portfolio is an impressive collection of exciting low-brow art and toys.

Nowadays, Tamar focuses primarily on illustration and painting, returning to more classical technique after long years of vector-animation, and pausing for a while from toy design. She illustrates editorials and produces her own fanzine, Toffeecola, as well as a comics & soap (no mistake here) product kit named Elephant & Bird Soap Adventures, which combines her self-produced organic handmade soap bars with a 4-page comic.

These can be purchased directly from the online store on her website GO-TAM. While we are all hoping for more toy-stuff coming from her, an idea which she doesn’t at all reject, this is pretty awesome and mind-bending stuff!

Underground Blend - Volume06 launches

Hey Tenacious Readers, Gavriel Discordia Here,

We just wrapped Volume 006 of Underground Blend with exclusive stickers by HANKSYMonster Little, Psychological Industries, Drchipohpoh, S.S.O.S.V.A., Designer and Your Ninja Blogger Benny Kline even slid us some Tenacious Ninja stickers designed by Playful Gorilla. Quite a list of talent right in one sticker pack.

You can pick up this pack, and all the other Volumes, from the following websites:

ALSO: We have been doing these packs for 2-3 years now and each pack was limited to 100 for these 6 Volumes. The project has been picking up momentum as we went on, but too slowly for us. And asking Artists for 100 of a single sticker was a strain for some artists to swing our way. We trade back a ton of stickers as well, so you can imagine how that adds up on our end as well.

Starting with Volume007 Underground Blend will be limited to 25 packs. Any artists or activists or agents who have stickers they wish to contribute or trade and get in to future packs can email

UVD: Weekly Wrap-Up: Ep 12

Urban Vinyl Daily is on it again with another episode of pure news and little in the way of wild speculative opinion, and absolutely no Commercial Bias what-so-ever. Its not only refreshing, its good journalism. And I appreciate the healthy contribution to the Designer Toy scene that they provide. This show covers a ton of material in a very short time and Ben and Travis never use The Weekly Wrap-Up to waste the viewers time with needless punditry, personal agendas, or unsolicited advice. Scholars and Gentlemen all around.

Toy Scene Review - S01E01 - Israel

Israel’s and Tel Aviv’s cultural climate is a fertile ground for the development of various subcultures and art movements. Open to diverse global influence, the effects of cartoon and sci-fi cultures as well as street art and graffiti, are very evident in Israeli art, both indoors and outdoors.

When Urbanix, an urban art gallery and shop in the hip city center of Tel Aviv, opened in the mid-2000s an actual community of toy designers and collectors was formed. As a brick and mortar store, Urbanix was the go-to place for collectors and designers, until in the early 2010s its activity was shifted towards on-line sales, distribution to fashion stores, and pop-ups at fairs and events, until its final fade-out in 2013. With its closing, the community’s activity moved primarily to social media, specifically to the DesignerToysIsrael page set up by designer and collector Gadi Yosef and operated by him and, recently, also by fellow collector Yaniv Brick.

Just when it looked like the community is doomed to forever e-bay shop, from an unexpected direction emerged what might become the new brick & mortar center for the Israeli community; BuXa is an unprecedented combination of a cocktail bar, live music venue, and most importantly an art toy gallery. When opened in 2013, the vision of its creative directors and founding partners, Daniel Donner and Itay Pasha, was for BuXa to become a space for showcasing local low-brow artists, ranging from graffiti and tattoo artists to graphic designers and illustrators. With that in mind, BuXa’s d├ęcor displays a vast collection (hundreds!) of art toys from the past decade. The space hosts regular rotating art shows as well as special events for the designer toy community.

In April 2016 it hosted a customization event in participation of headliners SketOne and Rik Lee, the Artists for Israel project group, and local customizers. A month later it hosted the first Israeli toy collectors meetup in a very long while. Addressing not only collectors, the setting of a bar at Rothschild Blvd - the beating heart of Tel Aviv’s night life -  also enables BuXa to reach out to new audiences and expose them to the world or art toys.

BuXa will soon shift to higher gear with the official airing of its website and online store, and the opening of a new showcase room. The website’s purpose is not only to distribute designer toys to the local community but mostly to serve as an international sales platform for custom toys by many Israeli local artists. Make sure to check-out their website once it is live for news and sales of some long sold-out and rare items you are unlikely to find elsewhere, as well as for originals and customs by Israeli designers.

In this series of posts we will review the Israeli designer toy scene by spotlighting a representative selection of its artists: Tamar Moshkovitz, Avri Rosen-Zvi, Shin Lamed, Itay G., and Ori Gami. Approaching the field of art toys from their broad spectrum of technical backgrounds and artistic disciplines, each of them provides a glimpse at some of the numerous faces of both the scene in general and its Israeli flavor in particular.

Yaniv Brick is an Israeli toy collector and the administrator of the DesignerToysIsrael Facebook community page. DesignerToysIsrael posts daily news on designer toys and low-brow art in Hebrew and English.

BrickWarriors - Digger Armor Set

There are some other parts that I have featured in this review, that are not part of the Digger set. These are the main components that go together as the intended set.

I had picked up some great new LEGO minifig compatible bits that come from the minds over at BrickWarriors, and the one I'm reviewing today is the fantastic Digger Armor Set!

As I was getting ready to review these, the urge to get some custom painting done with this set came over me, as it has a great Warhammer Fantasy/Hobbit-Battle of the Five Armies Dwarven/Orc armor sort of vibe going for it.

Now it had been some time since I really painted miniatures (slaps own hand), so it took a while to get the nerve to jump back in and paint something this small. But true to the quality of BrickWarriors' bits, the designs are made of premium plastic, have clean workable line and form, that look beautiful as is, but also take a paint job very well.
The vambrace armor in the lower left corner is the original dark gray that the set came in. After spraying a white base coat, I followed it with a copper base color. (the blue wire is just a paper clip I bend and push up through some chipboard for holding down small parts as I paint them)
I'm pretty snobbish when it comes to spray paint, as I primarily use Montana for my projects, which is what you see being used above, but I had hoped to jump onto seeing how well the new Ironlak Sugar paints that are out now would work, but that's a whole other custom toy/paint demo I'll tackle down the road.
Along with the helmet, weapon, shield, and breastplate armor, I also picked up (shown in lower right hand corner) the vambrace and shin guard elements to round out my soon to be heavily armored minifigure.
First of all, all of these parts were an absolute joy to paint, and after doing a lengthy run of searching, the custom Lego market has some genuine artists out there creating some extremely cool dioramas and unique characters. I'm looking to do a bit of coverage on this in a later post, as some of the work is just astounding.

So I went with a silver, copper, and red color motif, with accents of black and acid green and other little hints of blue and off white throughout it. The helmet and shield above I believe were the most successful, but that's more to the fact that I was fumbling back through my own miniature painting skills like a drunk sushi chef wielding sporks on a Tuesday during all you can inhale spicy tuna roll night.
Mini figure on left top and bottom shown with unpainted armor set. Finished version on right top and bottom.
While there are a few things I would go back and fix about my own paint application, Brick Warriors' excellent attention to design and form made even this hard to screw up. Eventually, I'd like to build a small unit of these, Warhammer Fantasy style, just to see what that looks like.

So if you're looking for some kick ass fantasy armor to round out your LEGO or other brick building sets, you can't go wrong here with the parts above. Thanks for reading!

FCTRY Guide to Eating Near Javits Center (NYCC, NY NOW, Toy Fair, Agenda, etc)

Our friends at FCTRY (makers of the awesome Hillary and Bernie action figures) have offered up their own tailored guide to good food and drink near the wasteland of the Javits Center in NYC. This includes both places that are walking distance from the convention center (in case you can't or won't eat the cafeteria pizza inside, or the dirty water dogs outside), as well as a few more hip and tasty places downtown which are a cab or train ride away.

As an aside, for all you visiting from out of town and attending an event at the Javits Center, PLEASE CROSS 11TH AVE VERY CAREFULLY, making sure you look both ways and pay attention the ENTIRE walk across the avenue. It's wide and traffic comes from both ways, AND makes turns onto 11th Ave from several different side streets. Stay safe kids.

IN STOCK NOW: Vinyl Idolz Alex and Joker, Vinyl Vixens Harley Quinn, POP Rides Ecto-1 and Dorbz Rides BTTF Einstein and DeLorean

Hobbes Sculpture by Rich Page of UME Toys

This was a commissioned piece sculpted by Rich Page, a UK artist aka UME Toys. You can't have this one, because it's got an owner already, but you can hit Rich up here to commission your own. Calvin & Hobbes is near and dear to my heart, as my father read it to me on Sunday mornings when I was a kid. An adorable 3D rendition of a beloved character which will forever live deep in my subconscious, child brain.  Nice work, Rich.
