UGLYDOLL Film planned by STX Entertainment

STX ENTERTAINMENT
TO LAUNCH FAMILY/ANIMATION AND CONSUMER PRODUCTS/LICENSING DIVISIONS WITH EYE TOWARD DEVELOPING PROJECTS ACROSS FILM, TELEVISION, DIGITAL AND CONSUMER PRODUCTS ARENAS

- Studio Enters Rights Agreement with UGLYDOLL Toy Line as First Significant Investment for New Divisions -

(Burbank, May 28, 2015) - STX Entertainment has announced the launch of a family and animation division geared toward creating multi-platform family franchises across film, television and digital. Additionally, the studio will be establishing a consumer products, licensing and merchandising arm to take full advantage of the extended opportunities provided by these properties.  STX has identified the first project that will be developed for the family audience and has entered a partnership with beloved iconic toy brand UGLYDOLL as a leading pillar of the studio's new division.  The agreement was co-announced today by Adam Fogelson, chairman of the motion picture group for STX Entertainment, and Drew Matilsky, Managing Partner of Pretty Ugly LLC. STX expects the first step of this collaboration to be the development of a full-scale animated feature, with plans to explore future projects for other platforms shortly thereafter.

The UGLYDOLL universe is the distinctive and highly regarded toy brand created by David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim along with Drew Matilsky, the founders of parent company Pretty Ugly LLC.  Horvath and Matilsky will serve as executive producers on the new movie. Gigi Pritzker and OddLot Entertainment are also set to co-produce the film.

Populated by satirical, playful, and off-kilter characters that go by names like Wage, Babo, Ice-Bat and Wedgehead, the "uglyverse" is a world in which the traditional definition of "ugly" is turned on its head as it celebrates characters who are distinctive, special and different. Started in 2001 when Horvath signed a letter to Kim, his college sweetheart, with a drawing of a monster with unconventional proportions, the UGLYDOLL brand quickly grew into a universe of colorful and nuanced characters.

"We created UGLYDOLL on the premise that real beauty is found in the little twists and turns that make us who we are," said Horvath. "We could not be more excited or optimistic about the future of the UGLYDOLL universe in the hands of the STX Entertainment team. In the past, we have been strategically organic and restrained in developing our business and, with STX now on board as our partners, we look forward to significantly growing the awareness and presence of these unique and lovable characters.  We are thrilled to have the most creative, capable and experienced minds in the entertainment industry approaching our uglyverse in a very holistic, 360 degree way. STX understands what makes us distinctive and relatable and they are committed to maintaining the integrity of what makes these dolls so special."

Fogelson added, "We are thrilled to enter the family arena, and honored to have our first project be based on the UGLYDOLL universe.  David and Drew have not just created toys, they have created an alternative way to view the world and the people around us.  The creative vision behind these dolls is extremely detailed and very rich for storytelling across many platforms.   The moment you see these characters, you get their whole world immediately. They are endearing yet fundamentally flawed in some real and identifiable way. That's what makes them so relatable. Kids and adults love these characters because we all can understand the challenges and triumphs of being different."

"UGLYDOLL's singular approach to creating loveable, nuanced characters provides immense creative fuel to build a narrative anchored around the bevy of characters that make up the 'uglyverse,'" said Gigi Pritzker, Chief Executive Officer of OddLot Entertainment.

Explained Sophie Watts, President of STX Entertainment, "As we launch our new animation and family division, and begin to identify other partnerships with long-term potential across our company, we believe this is the ideal first vehicle to cultivate and grow with creative care and expert handling. UGLYDOLL is a genuine gem with enormous creative upside, not only in the feature film world, but also for television, digital, gaming and many other platforms. This brand is the perfect launch pad to create a strong foundation in animation as well as a licensing and merchandising arm for our business. In particular, a full-scale feature will propel the UGLYDOLL brand into a global platform and broaden the considerable acclaim and recognition that UGLYDOLL already has in Asia, where STX has also built a number of strategic partnerships."

Playboy Teams with World Artists | License! Global | Blitzway | Coartism

Playboy Teams with World Artists | License! Global

Playboy has joined forces with Blitzway to create a limited edition collection of art figurines that highlight the brand's history of bringing together art and pop culture.

Blitzway has tapped seven artists from around the world to each create a figurine inspired by their own interpretation of the brand, from the Playboy Bunny to Hugh Hefner.

Among the collaborating artists are David Flores, Eric So, Hands in Factory, Les Schettkoe, Sticky Monster Lab, TwelveDot and Mighty Jaxx.

The Sticky Monster Lab figurine is the first to launch and is available now exclusively at Coartism.com. The additional six figurines will launch throughout the year, all priced at $160.

Interesting follow-up article here...

Excerpt: After jettisoning most of its current licensees, the company set out to develop new relationships with partners that would help position it as an upscale, aspirational lifestyle brand.

Last year, Playboy, which is ranked No. 42 on License! Global's exclusive Top 150 Global Licensors list, brought in $1.5 billion in sales of licensed product, with partners including the upscale Parisian boutique Colette and fashion designer Marc Jacobs.

Now, the company's licensing strategy has evolved beyond simple logo-slapping into what, in some cases, can almost be considered a diffusion-style model, like that of major fashion labels. No where is this more perfectly illustrated that at Bar Fifty-Three, which relies less on the Playboy name and more on the core essence of the brand.

Earlier this month Playboy also announced a new collaboration with eight world artists and licensee Blitzway to create art figurines featuring stylized interpretations of the brand.

The figurines will be released throughout the year and will retail for $160.

Brandt Peters Dunny the 13 Series by Kidrobot

From award winning, contemporary toy artist Brandt Peters comes The 13; Kidrobot's latest Dunny Series. “The 13” features thirteen evil Dunny souls providing a history lesson in the macabre based on classic All Hallows' Eve tropes and vintage horror exploitation cinema icons, with feminine frights designed by none other than Kathie Olivas.

Legend has it that a shady eccentric by the name of Lord Strange opened up the 13th dimension one blood moon, and in so doing filled his demented 13 floor mansion, Infernal Manor, with beasts, creatures and monstrosities of every type. Lord Strange was never seen againÉ his lair abandoned and sealed from the public since that horrific evening. None brave enough to venture into Infernal Manor has ever returned to tell their tale. Do you dare seek The 13?

These have a ship date for Fall 2015 and will retail for $11.99 apiece.

123KLAN Fellastar 6-inch figure by Artoyz - JUST ARRIVED

Custom Troubleboy Squadt by Jon-Paul Kaiser

Jon-Paul Kaiser seems to always have a stack of commission work to complete and as customs arrive to their rightful home, everyone else gets to envy the wonderful creations. Jon-Paul's latest delivered commission piece is a Custom Troubleboy Squadt, designed by Ferg and Brandt Peters. The design is relatively straight forward, accentuating the existing lines of the original piece. Jon-Paul's artistic black and white touch is very prominent in the overall finished design, creating a tattooed, weapon wielding troublemaker. Photography is taken by Justin Allfree, Jon-Paul Kaiser's go to photographer.

tenacious-toys.blogspot.com is now Tenacious.Ninja

OK, Benny, now just what the hell is going on with the Tenacious Blog today? The domain changed? What's this Tenacious Ninja thing?

Glad you asked, thanks for noticing.

Lemme explain:
I've been building and writing this blog for about 5 years on the Blogger platform. It's free, so that's awesome, and there's a built-in communication between Blogger and Google search simply because it's a Google product. I love that.

When you first start a Blogger blog, you get to choose the beginning of the URL for your blog, but it'll always end with .blogspot.com unless you set up a "vanity" address using a domain you've purchased. Making that switch isn't hard, or expensive. SpankyStokes.com and ToysREvil.net are two examples of blogs you probably already read that have set up custom domains for their blogs a long time ago.

I sorta never did this... I'm not sure why. It didn't seem like a priority to me until I realized we have been blogging for 5 years and had over a million pageviews. Only then did it dawn on me that my blog's domain was wack... by that I mean, too long and cumbersome. tenacious-toys.blogspot.com ... man, that's a mouthful and really not a pretty URL to stick on a business card. Also, hard to remember offhand.

Thankfully, we have the Google, so this blog is very easy to find and comes up #1 on Google if you search "tenacious toys blog" so you can understand why I might have placed this whole custom domain concept on the backburner.

This year, however,  I've spent a lot of time setting up new domains, websites and social accounts for other people and companies. I started thinking about domains a bit more clearly this year. I also noticed in GoDaddy that they began to offer new "extensions" which are basically new endings that replace .com or .net or .info or those other more common endings.

Out of curiosity, I logged onto GoDaddy and searched for new, short domains with the word tenacious in them - I wanted to keep my Tenacious branding but establish a short, memorable URL which could be easily communicated. I found .club, .nyc, .today, .buzz, .reviews and all kinds of other ones I could use. But nothing seemed to fit...

... until I found .ninja.

Tenacious. Dot. Ninja.

I was actually laughing out loud at the absurdity of that idea, and bought it right away.

I mean, what the hell, GoDaddy? .ninja is STILL funny to me! Why the hell is there a .ninja?!

So my mind starts racing... maybe this blog could actually have it's OWN mascot! A ninja! And all of a sudden, it hit me: Tony Gil (Gilt Studios). Many of his custom toys are little ninjas! And they're awesome, simple and tight characters with personality, and they are fun. They were perfect:
So I reached out to Tony (who I've worked with in the past) and basically told him the whole story, and he was into the concept - his character as this blog's mascot. And Tony is a very talented sculptor and painter but I had one specific guy in mind to translate Tony's 3D character into a mascot, because he so expertly designed our pitbull logo for the Tenacious Toys store: Alex Rivera (Playful Gorilla).

Alex was all for it, and Tony was all for it, so I set the wheels in motion. What Alex came back with was a brilliant, cartoony reinterpretation of Tony's Handplant Ninja character - the Tenacious Ninja. It's fun, it's blue, it's badass, it's adorable... it's the perfect graffiti-writing, ass-kicking mascot for an art toy blog:

If you're looking for tight, colorful and super-professional mascot or logo development in this style, I highly recommend reaching out to Alex on his FB business page (or friend him on Facebook and message him there). He is available for commissioned work.

Look for much more Tenacious Ninja action on this blog in the future - we will be creating awesome Tenacious Ninja t-shirts, stickers, and using the artwork in promotional materials, and I believe Tony is planning on creating actual custom figures of this exact character. Obviously, we will be posting about all of that as it develops.

Thanks for reading the new Tenacious.Ninja blog! Hopefully now it'll be easy for you to remember our domain name....
